I got a new phone.

I just recently switched to an Android phone – the wonderful HTC Desire, and have been playing around with the camera on it, and two different camera apps so far. I was interested in seeing how it would compare to my old iPhone 3GS which gave me some great shots, and the Hipstamatic App was good for some interesting filters and the like.

But, I’ve been mostly pleased with the Desire’s camera, though the colours aren’t quite as vibrant as the iPhone’s camera were it seems. But the RetroCamera and fx camera apps have been really fun and versatile too, and add a lot of fun to the camera.

Here’s some shots of a beautiful sunset in Salthill, Galway this weekend:

It definitely gives good lens flare (which I happen to like. I also like taking photos into the sun as I have a soft spot for silhouettes.) I’m no photographer or anything, but it’s nice to have a portable tool that can record things I see with a decent quality for me.

Hey, those shots from the prom are making me nostalgic. Why did you switch from the iPhone BTW? Just wondering. In the market for a smartphone.

Also, how much did the HTC Desire set you back?

I actually had a mishap with my last iPhone, and when I was getting the new phone I was gonna get either the iPhone 4 or the HTC Desire. The flexibility of Android and the better contract options were what drew me to the Desire instead, and I’ve completely fallen for it now at this stage. I didn’t pay that much really – about €100 – but I got it on contract and switched networks. I’m actually on Meteor now with it and got a good deal with it. There seems to be limited enough availability of that model though with Meteor. It was the only one in that shop at the time, and they’d been out of stock for ages prior to then.

Cool, thanks. I’m considering buying the handset myself and either staying on Meteor Pay As You Go (and limit my web usage to WiFi as much as possible) or move to eMobile whose Bill Pay deals with 2GB data allowances may work out better.

But my big question about Meteor: how fast is its internet connection? Folks always say its network isn’t as good as Vodafone and O2.

The mobile internet hasn’t been noticeably slower than O2 at all, but I’ve been mostly in and around Galway city at the moment, and I know the network isn’t as strong outside the main urban areas.

But I’ve used the phone internet for my iMac too one day when the wifi at home was down, and it was still nice and fast. No problems with it at all really.

Good to know. Thanks. Keep the photos coming…
