Is there a piano in your house? Does anyone play it? Is it even in tune?
Has it become just a piece of furniture that you have photo frames sitting on top of?
I want to change that. I want to go to houses that have pianos that have been a bit neglected recently, and bring some life back into them.
House concerts are wonderful informal gatherings where you can listen to a musician or two perform a set of their music in the comfort of someone’s home. There’s a donation box which goes towards the musician, and people bring along some wine or food or whatever is appropriate, and turn it into wonderful evening of socialising.
There’s a regular monthly house concert here in Galway, which is a pretty unique way to see some brilliant musicians performing in a very intimate venue, and then get to know people here in this town too. A very lovely mix of folk turn out every month for it, and the music is always pretty stellar.
I want to do something similar in all those houses with neglected pianos around the country. If your piano needs a bit love, then lets get together and organise a house concert. The money from the donation box will cover the costs of the musician, but also the cost of getting the piano tuned. Invite friends, family, neighbours and random friendly strangers along to the house concert, and have an evening of live music in your own home.
